Playground Safety Tips for Summer

Summer is the perfect season for kids to head outdoors, get moving, and enjoy some sunshine. For many families, that means spending time at local playgrounds. Swing sets, slides, monkey bars, and climbing structures are fantastic for building strength, coordination, and confidence. But while playgrounds offer plenty of benefits, they can also pose safety risks, especially during the warmer months when kids are more likely to be outside for longer periods.

At PM Pediatric Urgent Care, we love seeing kids active and healthy, but we also know that preventable injuries can put a damper on summer fun. Fortunately, with a few smart habits and some simple precautions, parents and caregivers can help kids play safely all season long.

Common Playground Injuries During Summer

At PM Pediatric Urgent Care, we see our fair share of playground-related injuries every summer. Many are minor, but some can be serious and require urgent medical attention. Here are a few of the most common injuries we see:

1. Broken Bones and Sprains

Falls from playground equipment, especially monkey bars, swings, and climbing walls are a leading cause of broken arms, wrists, or ankle sprains. These injuries usually happen when kids lose their grip or balance.

2. Concussions

High platforms or jungle gyms can be fun to explore, but a fall from even a moderate height can lead to a head injury. Concussions are a real concern when kids hit their heads on the ground, equipment, or other objects.

3. Burns from Hot Equipment

Metal slides, plastic swing seats, or rubber flooring can heat up quickly under the summer sun. Kids can easily get painful burns when they come into contact with surfaces that are too hot.

4. Cuts and Abrasions

Splinters, jagged edges, or poorly maintained equipment can cause scrapes or cuts, especially if a child lands awkwardly or brushes up against a rough surface.

The good news? Many of these injuries are preventable with a little extra care and awareness.

Simple Ways to Prevent Playground Injuries

You don’t have to hover or take the fun out of playtime. By keeping safety in mind and being prepared, you can help minimize the risks and keep the fun going all summer long.

1. Use Equipment as Intended

Encourage your child to use each piece of equipment the way it’s meant to be used. That means sitting down to go down the slide and going feet first (not headfirst), using both hands on the monkey bars, and avoiding standing on swings. Reinforcing these habits early makes safe play feel natural.

2. Encourage Caution with Climbing

Kids love to climb, but it’s important they know their limits. Teach them to move slowly, hold railings, and always be aware of their surroundings. Remind younger children to take one step at a time and to be careful near open edges or ladders. Make sure your child also knows not to climb when coming directly from a pool or water activity without drying off – many wet hands have caused slips and poor grips on playground equipment.

3. Check Equipment Temperature

Always do a quick touch-test before letting your child hop on a swing or slide, especially during midday when the sun is strongest. Hot surfaces can cause second-degree burns in seconds. If it feels too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your child’s skin.

4. Inspect the Playground

Before letting your child loose, scan the area. Look for loose bolts, rust, cracked plastic, or exposed nails. Also check the ground surface; safe playgrounds usually have impact-absorbing materials like rubber mats, wood chips, or sand. Avoid playgrounds with concrete or asphalt surfaces.

5. Match Supervision to Your Child’s Needs

Every child is different. Younger or less confident children may need closer supervision and a little coaching, while older kids may do well with a bit more independence. Know your child’s physical abilities and comfort level and keep an eye out even if they’re seasoned playground pros. Also remind the older kids to be aware of the little ones to ensure the playground is safe for everyone.
